AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan: 'Low Winter Sun' May Benefit From Binge-Watching

Josh Sapan 2010 - P 2013

AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan is a big fan of subscription VOD and social media, giving both platforms credit for boosting the fortunes of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and other cable shows. And hopefully those technological trends can do likewise to save AMC’s Low Winter Sun, a crime drama that Sapan acknowledges hasn’t yet caught on with audiences since debuting a few months ago.

PHOTOS: Inside 'The Walking Dead's' Spooky Season 4 Premiere

"The history of network television,” Sapan said on Thursday at the Guggenheim Securities Symposium in New York, “has generally been one in which decisions are made quite rapidly about performance … so one would see shows get canceled X number of shows into season one, and that’s sensible for that business model."

But that was then and this is now, Sapan said, so it’s too early to declare Low Winter Sun a hit or a miss just yet, because it hasn’t experienced the "effect of what happens between seasons" yet. Presumably, it will get some buzz in social media, audiences will catch it on SVOD where they can binge-watch several episodes, and then they’ll make it a point to tune in to the linear offering next year. This is how Breaking Bad doubled its audience one season over another, then more than doubled it again, he explained.

"There is, as a consequence of the technology, this new phenomenon that really does seem to be occurring," he said. "We have to be very careful about not being precipitous in our judgment of TV shows as to whether they can build a head of steam. So as it relates to Low Winter Sun, we’re evaluating."

He added: "I thought that the last few episodes were quite different and better and more urgent than the first part of the season. I think the backdrop is sort of interesting. We’ll have to evaluate exactly what we do and how much benefit the mid-season/off-season effect can be. But it’s not to be underestimated."

PHOTOS: 'Breaking Bad': 10 Most Mind-Blowing Episodes

The king of SVOD -- Netflix, with 40 million worldwide subscribers -- is "very much a friend" to AMC, Sapan said, even though the service is also a competitor since delving into content creation with House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black and others.

Sapan also spent a lot of time assuring the Wall Street analysts in attendance that AMC can grow just fine without Breaking Bad, which recently ended. He reminded them that The Walking Dead beat NFL programming for several weeks, and that a companion show is in the works. Plus, there are still two more seasons of Mad Men. He’s also enthusiastic about upcoming shows Turn, about the Revolutionary War, and Halt & Catch Fire, about 1980s-era computer visionaries. Better Call Saul, a Breaking Bad spinoff, is also scheduled for 2014.

Sapan also stressed that international expansion is a key commitment, which is why AMC Networks said last month that it would pay $1 billion to acquire European TV company Chellomedia. "The advertising opportunity is underexploited" at Chellomedia, he said.

Miramax Argues Saul Zaentz Took Too Long to File 'The English Patient' Lawsuit

The English Patient Poster - P 2013

At 162 minutes, The English Patient was too long for some moviegoers. But that's nothing compared to the amount of time that Saul Zaentz has been wondering whether he's gotten everything due to him for the 1996 Oscar-winning film.

For example, in 1997, Zaentz noted that distributor Miramax had spent $30 million to advertise the film and told The Hollywood Reporter, "Have I been paid all the money Miramax owes me? No, but these things take time. Am I nervous about being paid? Talk to me in January after I've seen the fourth-quarter statement."

Flash forward 16 years.

In September 2011, Zaentz sued Miramax and its former owner, the Walt Disney Co., for $20 million in profits from the hit drama.

Now, Miramax has filed a motion for summary adjudication over Zaentz's claims relating to theatrical advertising expenses. In court papers filed last week, Miramax nods toward that old THR quote and is contending that the producer simply waited too long to bring allegations that it improperly deducted expenses.

The dispute has been going on for seemingly forever.

Miramax, then run by the Weinstein brothers, purchased the film in 1995 from Zaentz for $27.5 million. The agreement provided for contingent compensation depending on its performance.

In the lawsuit, Zaentz alleges he has been shortchanged on a film that grossed more than $300 million when it came out. "To this day, despite the great success of the film, [Zaentz] has not even received from Miramax payment sufficient to recoup [Zaentz's] costs of producing The English Patient," the suit said.

Part of the controversy is over issues of expense allocation. Zaentz claims that Miramax shouldn't have deducted $17.5 million of theatrical advertising expenses because the money also benefited the home entertainment release of the film. There's also the issue of $2 million deducted for money related to the promotion of talent for Academy Awards, Golden Globes and other award ceremonies. The suit alleges a conspiracy "to keep the picture in a paper loss position so that no matter how much money The English Patient earned, Miramax and Disney would reap all of the profits" while Zaentz would never share in the success.

But a side issue has arisen over Zaentz's duties to file objections in a timely manner.

According to Miramax, the acquisition agreement for The English Patient came with an incontestability clause that specified that Zaentz had 36 months to challenge a participation statement.

The parties entered into a tolling agreement effective November 20, 2000, that allowed Zaentz some grace period in which to file an objection, but Miramax says that by that date, Zaentz's clock had already run out. The producer allegedly got participation statements in 1997, which Miramax argues made them incontestable three years later.

"Because Zaentz did not comply with the Incontestability Clause insofar as its Theatrical Advertising Claims are concerned, those claims are barred," says the summary adjudication motion.

Miramax is being represented by star litigator Martin Katz.

Zaentz is bringing Marty Singer to the legal battle. The plaintiff's response to the argument that the claim is time-barred is that the incontestability clause comes from an inoperable short-form agreement. Zaentz' attorneys also say that the expense allocations represent just one of their claims. The lawsuit also contends that Miramax has cheated on profits in other ways, including unfavorably packaging the film with others in its licensing deals.

Assuming the judge allows the claims to go forward, it would set up a high-powered legal showdown at a trial next April. That's not too long to wait, right?

Andy Kaufman's Brother Says He is Victim of a Hoax (Video)

Michael Kaufman CNN Screengrab - H 2013

The bizarre Andy Kaufman saga continues.

EXCLUSIVE: Andy Kaufman's Brother on Death Hoax Claims: 'I Think I've Been Misquoted'

The comedian's brother, Michael Kaufman, appeared on CNN's The Lead with Jake Tapper on Thursday, where he told host Jake Tapper that he believes he is the victim of a hoax meant to trick him into believing that Andy is still alive and father to a 24-year-old woman.

"I believe I am part of the hoax," Kaufman said. "I don't believe that [the woman claiming to be his daughter] is acting on her own, though."

Kaufman flatly denied a report on The Smoking Gun that says he hired an actress named Alexandra Tatarsky to play the role of the Taxi star's 24-year-old daughter, allegedly born five years after Andy's official cancer-related death in 1985. The woman took the stage at a New York comedy club on Monday, claiming Andy is her father and is still alive.

STORY: Andy Kaufman's Brother Says Comedian is Alive, in Love and Has a Daughter

The interview comes after 24 hours of swirling speculation and conspiracy theorizing over the staggering allegations that the comedian, who in life was famous for staging elaborate pranks, might have faked his death and burial. Similar rumors have surfaced repeatedly since Kaufman's death, and numerous websites have sprung up offering evidence of his existence. The out-there comedian would be 64 if he were alive today.

Earlier on Thursday, Michael Kaufman spoke to THR, saying he was "misquoted" in media coverage and that he never fully believed the story.

ITV Renews Simon Cowell's 'X Factor,' 'Britain's Got Talent' for Three Years

Simon Cowell

LONDON – U.K. TV network giant ITV on Friday unveiled a three-year deal that will keep Simon Cowell hit shows The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent on the air.

The talent shows will remain on the network through 2016. The deal was completed late in the week amid reports of a new clause that continues to require Cowell to appear on one of the shows, but also allows him to appear on both shows, opening a door for his possible return to The X Factor in the U.K. in the future.

Cowell currently is a judge on Britain's Got Talent and the U.S. version of The X Factor, which has seen weaker ratings, leading some to raise questions about its future. He has said his U.S. role keeps him from appearing on-air on both U.K. shows.

Financial terms of the deal for two of Britain’s biggest TV formats weren't released, but reports had predicted a deal would be worth around $240 million (150 million pounds).

The agreement between ITV and production firms Syco Entertainment, a joint venture of Cowell and Sony, and FremantleMedia UK, means that
Britain’s Got Talent will return to ITV in the spring for an eighth season. The 11th season of The X Factor will follow next fall.

ITV2 will also continue to air sister shows The Xtra Factor and Britain’s Got More Talent.

"I am thrilled that we have extended our deal with ITV for Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor," said Cowell. "They have been fantastic partners, and we have some exciting new plans to take the shows to the next level." He didn't immediately provide details.

Said Peter Fincham, ITV director of television: “Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor are two of the most popular and most talked about shows on TV. They set the gold standard for entertainment production. We’re pleased to announce this deal, which will see them continue to be an important part of ITV's schedule."

And Charles Garland, CEO of Syco, added: "This new agreement is testament to both the strength of our television brands and the quality of our partnership with ITV and Fremantle."

'Scandal' Case Study: Bellamy Young Spills on Mellie's 'Harrowing' Past

Scandal Episodic Bellamy Young 2 - H 2013"Scandal's" Tony Goldwyn and Bellamy Young

[Warning: This story contains spoilers from Thursday's "Everything's Coming Up Mellie" episode of Scandal.]

ABC's red-hot Scandal delivered another jaw-dropping hour Thursday when the political drama flashed back 15 years to show Fitz and Mellie's first meeting with Cyrus and, in the present day, reveal Olivia Pope & Associates' search for answers behind the mysterious bombing of a civilian flight that hit close to home for Washington's top Gladiator.

During the jam-packed episode, Mellie (Bellamy Young) -- a partner at a law firm when Fitz enters the California governor's race -- learns that she will have to be the one to make the biggest sacrifice if her husband is to have a successful political career. Only the price she pays is a major one when Fitz's father, Jerry (Barry Bostwick) -- drunk after a fight with Fitz, who insisted on not using his shady military background as a campaign strategy -- rapes his daughter-in-law, Mellie.

Meanwhile, Olivia (Kerry Washington) told the rest of the Gladiators that the president (Tony Goldwyn) was the pilot following orders from her father Rowan (Joe Morton) to shoot down a civilian plane with her mother on board.

PHOTOS: On-Set With the Gladiators: Inside the Fast-Paced World of ABC's 'Scandal'

During their search for answers, Charlie (George Newbern) sets up a hungry Quinn (Katie Lowes) to kill the one guy who could have provided answers about the lone passenger removed from the doomed flight said to be carrying a dirty bomb that could have wiped out half of London.

And because this is Scandal, the biggest episode comes in the final moments when Rowan goes to visit Omar Dresden, the prisoner who was pulled from the plane before it departed -- only Omar happens to be Maya (Khandi Alexander) -- Olivia's presumed dead mother, who is being held as an inmate in a maximum security prison.

The Hollywood Reporter turned to Young to break down the events of the episode and what's next for the tortured first lady.

Fitz's father Jerry (Barry Bostwick) raped Mellie. What was your reaction when you found out?

I found out at the table read -- publicly -- and it was harrowing, I won't lie. It's the chance of the lifetime to have material like this and to have such a rich episode for them to trust me with is humbling and terrifying, wonderful and a blessing. But that scene, to find out cold and reading it with everyone else at the table was like life -- not to say reading it at a table is going through it in real life by any measure -- but you numb out. Those events in life are so shocking was you numb out, those events in life are so shocking that you're not reading it with grace or aplomb; you're just getting through it. Barry is such a beautiful actor, and it was written so viciously -- [showrunner] Shonda [Rhimes] was clear in her vision of what she wanted it to be. It was a sobering table read.

Will Fitz ever find out that his father raped his wife?

We will see. I can't imagine what his response would be. I can't even speculate because the things I'd imagine, the writers can think of better scenarios than I can.

Does Mellie know who fathered her youngest son, fittingly named Jerry?

I can give no comment to that!

Is there anyone who knows the truth about Jerry raping Mellie?

I can't talk about it at all without saying something Shonda will shoot me for!

PHOTOS: Nudity, Slapping, Pranks! 'Scandal' Cast Share Their Most Scandalous Moments

We see Cyrus, Mellie and Fitz's first meeting. Considering it was Cy who told Mellie that it was her job to care for the president's career, is that speech from Cyrus his way of telling Mellie that she can't ever spill the family's dirty secrets?

Absolutely. Mellie is always willing to learn; she has no pride about failure -- she soldiers on. Meeting Cyrus, from the moment she heard the word "kingmaker," she was laser focused on soaking up every bit of wisdom from him. That's all she's wanted to be. She wanted to do that for Fitz and tried to do that in her own way. They've accomplished a bit together as a couple -- and they have dreams -- but she hasn't known how to take it forward. You can see her drinking in every word and questioning when she has a question, clocking it all and you can hear the cogs grinding forward in the slow but steady momentum as she starts to formulate her own ideas, since agreeing with Cyrus on that point and knowing how much she needs him -- but the true slap in the face is when he says, "Your job is to be the wife." It's a slap in the face because it's two-sided: Your job is no longer your life, your job is his life, and being a wife is a job, so do it and do it well. It's inextricable if you want him to move forward on this path. Mellie discovers a lot about herself in that moment because she might have been living life where to be a "wife" was something she looked down upon. But in that moment, she hears the full resonance of the fact that it takes a partnership and that being the wife is being Fitz's co-partner. You just have to accept that the world may not see that way.

Via flashback, we know that Mellie is aware of Fitz's military black ops experience and shooting down a commercial airliner. Will she use that nugget she's been holding on to? Is Fitz aware that she knows?

I can't comment!

Does Mellie know that Olivia's mother is alive? Will OPA question Jerry's involvement in the crash investigation?

Not as far as I know. OPA took on Maya Pope as a client, and anything Olivia Pope starts, Olivia Pope finishes. It's hard to say where it will end or what she will find out, but she'll be dogged in her pursuit of the truth, especially because it's so close to home.

Is this something that Mellie could help Olivia with, considering she ultimately wants Liv to run Fitz's re-election campaign?

We're in such a precarious moment because Olivia has just rebuked Mellie's desperate plea for aid in the election. I can't imagine at the time that Olivia would come to Mellie. If Olivia needed something from Mellie, what a question! That's what Washington turns on: Someone owing you a favor. Mellie would weigh the opportunity at hand heavily if Olivia came to her, hat in hand, in need. What a delicious moment!

PHOTOS: The Couples of Shondaland: 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Private Practice,' 'Scandal'

In present day, after Mellie begs Fitz to show up, he defends her during an interview and we see that he still cares. Could there still be romantic feelings between them?

In any relationship that long, there's certainly softness. It's underneath scar tissue -- there's still living, vital tissue but it's hidden. I feel that way about Fitz and Mellie. They have these moments of softness, and there have been glimpses of what used to be. They definitely enjoy each other, but you're meeting them at the worst time in their lives, which is ironic but that's how life is: You're in the White House, you get your dream and it's misery and hardship. But for sure, she still adores him and he still respects her. She's the mother of his children ...

Or so he thinks!

You're hilarious! But there is a very deep and enduring bond between them. If they didn't love each other, they couldn't make each other so angry.

Fitz (finally!) connects that Rowan is Olivia's father. How might Fitz respond?

It's the very definition of walking on eggshells. Sure, he's the leader of free world but he's not the ruler of B613. He has this horrible past that's burdened him daily, and now it's augmented by the horror that he killed the mother of the love of his life. No way it doesn't inform his every breath going forward. Fitz considers things. He weighs it all out before he acts and then acts decisively once he's made a decision. But Mellie is far more rash. All of this will weigh heavy upon him and when his action is born, it will be decisive and it will be simple -- there's always an elegance in what he decides to do. At the end of the day, he comes up with one swift, elegant act and I look forward to seeing what that will be.

Quinn is now mixed up with B613. How will her involvement there impact Fitz's relationship with Rowan?

I don't know, but how fun is it to watch Katie! What kind of crazy character development is that! It's amazing to watch such an evolution. These are not people to underestimate. They wouldn't be where they are if they were quitters or knew fear or if one little hardship can get them down.

Olivia's mother, Maya, is still alive but in maximum-security prison under the name of a prisoner who was presumed dead. How much of the "why" goes back to the White House?

I don't know that either! But anything Olivia is involved in, you'll see Fitz get involved in. That's his heart.

What did you think of Mellie's tragic history? How do you think Quinn will fare with B613? Were you surprised that Maya is still alive? Hit the comments below with your thoughts. Scandal airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.

China's Bona Film Group Posts Improved Third-Quarter Results

Yu Dong - P 2012

Late Thursday, Chinese film producer and distributor Bona Film Group, in which Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox owns a 19.9 percent stake, reported improved third-quarter financials.

Recently, Chinese investment firm Fosun Group agreed to acquire a 6.4 percent stake in Bona.

The company reported quarterly earnings of $2.8 million, more than double the $1.3 million recorded in the year-ago period. Revenue rose 42 percent from $24.6 million to $35.0 million.

Bona released three films in the latest quarter. They were action drama Unbeatable, which has become the highest-grossing Chinese-language film in Hong Kong this year, romantic comedy Lucky Star, starring Zhang Ziyi, and Oxide and Danny Pang's Out of Inferno 3D, the first 3D Chinese-language disaster film.

STORY: MGM Revenue Soars 43 Percent in Third-Quarter

"Overall, I am very pleased with the results that we delivered in the third quarter," said Bona founder, chairman and CEO Yu Dong. "We distributed three strong films -- Unbeatable, My Lucky Star and Out of Inferno 3D and continued to generate robust top- and bottom-line growth."

Yu was in Los Angeles recently for the 2013 U.S.-China Film Summit, during which he forecast a golden era for the Chinese film industry in the next decade and urged Hollywood talents to come to the world’s second-largest market to take advantage of growing opportunities.

He added: "We have made very good progress in 2013, releasing many quality films, growing our theater network, developing a film investment fund to finance the development and production of Bona films and TV projects over the next two years, and diversifying our ownership structure through a meaningful investment by Fosun Group."

Bona completed postproduction work on The White Storm, formerly known as The Cartel War, a crime thriller featuring Hong Kong stars Sean Lau, Louis Koo and Nick Cheung, which is due for release in mainland China on Nov. 29, 2013.

It also received the go-ahead from the Film Bureau to distribute Red 2, starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Anthony Hopkins. The film is scheduled for release in China on Friday (Nov. 15).

Looking ahead to 2014, Yu also commented on Bona's plans.

STORY: Lionsgate Quarterly Earnings Drop, Exceed Expectations

"The outlook for 2014 is even better as we have many strong film titles in our distribution and development pipelines, the financial resources to bring more quality films to market and plans to further expand our theater network," he said. "Additionally, we expect our international cooperation initiatives to gain traction, creating further revenue opportunities for us in the future."

Among projects coming up are From Vegas to Macau, starring Chow Yun-Fat, Nicholas Tse and Tian Jing, directed by Wong Jing, which has wrapped and is tentatively scheduled for release around Chinese New Year in early 2014.

Overheard 3, a franchise about Hong Kong's real estate business directed by Alan Mak and Felix Chong and featuring Sean Lau, Louis Koo, Daniel Wu and Zhou Xun, is in postproduction and tentatively scheduled for release in early 2014.

Also due next year is psychological thriller Insanity, produced by Derek Yee, directed by Li Guangyao and starring Sean Lau and Huang Xiaoming.

Joe Roth's 'Third Act': From 'Gigli' to Billion-Dollar Producer and Pro Soccer Superstar

Joe Roth Roller Coaster - H 2013

This story first appeared in the Nov. 22 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

It's a warm autumn afternoon in Seattle, and the hyped-up crowd at the sports bar Fuel is spilling onto the sidewalk when in walks Hollywood veteran Joe Roth -- former chairman of Fox and Disney movie studios and, at 65, one of the industry's smoothest, shrewdest, most gravity-defying producers.

Instantly the bar owner materializes at his side. "Can I announce you're here?" he asks. Roth, in black sweatpants and a hoodie, demurs. "Let's keep it low-key," he says. Too late. "Excuse me, Mr. Roth," asks a patron. "May I shake your hand, sir?"

PHOTOS: Disney's 'Oz the Great and Powerful': Inside the Special Effects

To the sports fans of Seattle, Roth -- whose recent films include Alice in Wonderland and Oz the Great and Powerful -- is a hero. As managing owner of the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer since 2007, he's delivered one of his career's biggest hits. A weeknight regular-season game packs in more than 40,000 fans, twice the league average, many wearing the "rave green" that Roth selected for the team that represents the Emerald City. In a town with two other major-league teams -- the NFL's Seahawks and MLB's Mariners -- the buzz in Seattle these days is all about pro soccer. The Sounders have had 85 consecutive sellouts for a sport that Americans traditionally ignore.

For Roth, the team's success is part of a comeback from a series of painful personal and professional injuries, largely self-inflicted. In 2006, his abundantly financed production company Revolution Studios -- which had launched six years earlier with a never-to-be-replicated deal (in terms of the autonomy and guaranteed profit that it conferred on Roth) -- disintegrated after belching out a string of bombs, including the notorious 2003 Ben Affleck-Jennifer Lopez vehicle Gigli. Roth did fine, but Sony Pictures, which had financed Revolution and distributed its movies, had lost in the ballpark of $200 million.

Roth's personal life was troubled, too: In 2004, the jaded entertainment community was shocked by Roth's split from his wife of 20 years, Donna, the popular daughter of B-movie producer Sam Arkoff. Divorce is not rare, but this particular couple, good-looking and successful and with two children, had been like the industry's homecoming king and queen. Roth acknowledges that it caught not only Hollywood off-guard but him as well, even though he concedes that his wandering eye had been the precipitating factor.

EXCLUSIVE: Joe Roth to Produce Blind Wrestlers Drama 'Unleash the Mules' at Sony

From that low point, Roth has rebuilt. At a time when many alpha producers are floundering, Roth has a batch of movies on the horizon that includes Maleficent with Angelina Jolie (in theaters May 30); Heaven Is for Real, a faith-based story about the afterlife with Greg Kinnear; and the baseball movie Million Dollar Arm with Jon Hamm. "Joe is having a great third act," says DreamWorks Animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg. "Not only is he at the top of his movie game, but he's now become a successful sports mogul, too. He's having a ton of fun."

This appraisal pleases Roth. "Act 2 ended in divorce, it ended in [the demise of] Revolution … and I, like any normal human being, lost some confidence," he says with disarming -- and perfectly calibrated -- candor. "And when I started this team [in 2007], all of a sudden it turned into this phenomenon. And then right after I started the team, we did [2010's] Alice in Wonderland, which is over a billion dollars [in worldwide box office]." His momentum began to build.

Now Roth shares an 11,329-square-foot Holmby Hills residence (formerly the home of both Joseph Mankiewicz and Aaron Spelling) with his second wife, the former Irene Oh, now 36, who was an assistant in Sony's marketing department when he met her. The couple has a 4-year-old daughter and 20-month-old son. Roth also has a 29-year-old son and a 24-year-old daughter from his previous marriage, and he says he's finally on good terms with them as well as with his ex. "This third act has a very hard-fought collective family that is tight, has two new children for me, it has a great soccer team," he says. "And for good or bad, I'm the busiest producer in Hollywood."

STORY: 'Anger Management' Lawsuit Claims Joe Roth Committed Fraud to Satisfy Charlie Sheen

Roth takes pride in his roster of projects, but as a soccer player in his youth (and former coach of his elder son's childhood team), owning the Sounders is special. Before every game, a rollicking crowd gathers for the March to the Match, with fans chanting at the top of their lungs as they walk the few blocks from Pioneer Square in downtown Seattle to CenturyLink Field, accompanied by a 52-piece brass band -- an idea that came from Drew Carey, who also has an ownership stake in the Sounders. Roth walks at the head of the rollicking crowd, pausing for quick photos with fans.

Just outside the stadium, he nervously lights a cigarette and surveys the scene. Right before his eyes he finds yet more proof that the Sounders are a smash. "Scalpers," he says with satisfaction. "This does my heart good."

Disney to Take 'Newsies' on the Road

NEW YORK -- Extra! Extra! Disney's Broadway musical Newsies, about a bunch of scrappy young newspaper boys who take on the powerful publishing giants of 1899 New York for a fair deal, will kick off a North American tour in October next year.

The road company will begin performances in Schenectady, N.Y., and Waterbury, Conn., before the tour's official opening in Philadelphia. Dates in 25 cities over 43 weeks have been scheduled during the 2014-15 season, including stops at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, the Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas, the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco and the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto.

STORY: Disney's 'Newsies' Recoups in Record Time

“The enthusiasm from North American audiences and theaters for a Newsies tour has been palpable, proving that the affection for this title is deeper and more widespread than even we imagined," said Disney Theatrical president and producer Thomas Schumacher

A Tony Award winner for composer Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman's score and for Christopher Gattelli's choreography, the musical has been an unexpected breakout hit for Disney.

Directed by Jeff Calhoun, the show was adapted by book writer Harvey Fierstein from the 1992 Kenny Ortega movie musical, a fictionalized account of the New York City newsboy strike of 1899, which starred a young Christian Bale. That film was a major flop for Disney in its theatrical release but subsequently went on to acquire a passionate following in cable showings and home entertainment formats.

The stage version was conceived as a licensing property, but strong response to its fall 2011 premiere engagement at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse prompted a limited 13-week Broadway transfer, which opened March 29, 2012. Capitalized at just $5 million, which is low by Disney Theatrical's standards, the production quickly caught on with audiences, prompting Disney to make it an open-ended run.

Now approaching its 700th Broadway performance, Newsies has broken house records at the Nederlander Theatre seven times. The production announced recoupment of its initial investment in December 2012, making it the fastest of Disney's stage shows to move into profit.

The musical has grossed more than $77 million on Broadway to date and continues to be a robust box office performer.
